Legislative Updates

LOCAL ITEMS

First off, I want to apologize for having to cancel the Legislative MEAL but due to the weather and the fact that most of the Legislators and even most of the Administrative Assistants were working remotely due to the weather.  I attempted to reschedule it with the Capitol staff but there were not any times available until after the session closed, and truthfully it would of been a waste of time and money at that point.  We have already scheduled next year’s event for the 19th of February 2026.  That will be one week into the 2026 legislative session.  This gives us plenty of time to get things together  One thing that has been talked about is forming a Legislative Committee within the CoC, this would originally have two (2) members from the Independent, two from the Ministry and two from the Military, plus a member of Sooner State ABATE.  This committee would work not only to bring suggestions for bills to the table but would also be the go to person for getting information out to each of the groups quickly.  It would be a smaller version of the old U.S Defenders program but just on the state level.  Please take this back to your clubs and talk about it and if we could get the names of the volunteers by the May CoC we will start putting this together.

NOW ON TO THE ACTUAL LEGISLATION

Anti Profiling Bill- SB 543 that is authored by Senator Hall is in the Public Safety Committee.  We know it has been a problem getting this out of the committee, so it would be a great idea to support this bill.  The members of the Public Safety Committee are Chairman Darrell Weaver, Warren Hamilton, Michael Brooks, Darcy Jech, Casey Murdock,  Regina Goodwin, Jonathan Wingard, Spencer Kern.

Right of Way Violation bill- HB1022 authored by Representative Luttrell and Senator Frix who is out of the Muskogee area.  This bill not only gained another supporter but also passed by the Public Safety committee and the Judiciary and Public Safety Oversight committee.

This would be the time to call your Representative and ask them to support and vote yes on HB 1022

HB 1021 is a bill that would get rid of the limitations on handlebars, this would give you the right to choose just how high those bars can go.  This bill also is authored by Representative Luttrell and Senator Frix and it has passed out of committee so it will be headed to the floor of the House to be voted on.

These are the three big items relating to motorcycles but there were over 1900 bills submitted, I encourage you to look at some of these bills that might affect you.  I know that education bills will affect some of you.  Bills on healthcare.  Hell, there is even a bill to move energy drinks under the jurisdiction of the ABLE commission and make them only available to people over 21. There is a link on the Sooner State ABATE website that will lead you over to the Oklahoma Legislative website and from there you can click on advanced search and then subject or follow this link https://www.oklegislature.gov/SubjectIndex.aspx?Alpha=A&Session=Current and see just how many bills are being looked at this year.

The 2025 MidSouth MILE will be right here in Midwest City.  It will be held October 17-19th 2025 at the Reed Center right up the street,  Representatives from five states will be present and there will be discussions and seminars held about all of the hot topic items including Anti Profiling, Lane Filtering, Right to Repair and Right to Purchase.  This is a way to get information passed along and see what works in other states and use that information to get these laws passed.

NCOM convention

The next NCOM convention will be held May 8-10 in Biloxi MS.  They will be posting that information on www.onabike.com as the dates get closer and I will pass that along.

The 2025 MRF Meeting of the Minds will be held September 25-28 2025 in Shreveport, LA, again there will be more information available at www.mrf.org

FEDERAL ITEMS

MPP SURVEY let's make sure and take this once again, you can either go to www.motorcycleprofilingproject.com or you can scan the QR code that is on most of the tables.  It doesn't matter if you have taken it before or not, do it again - have every family member take the survey.  Tell all your friends to take it.  The MRF uses these numbers when they talk to the legislators in our nation's capital.  Let's give them lots of numbers.  There is also a link at www.mrf.org/federal-legislative-issues/ that can assist you with sending a preformed message.  It really takes about 3-4 minutes unless you want to add any additional comments.
